유학생 ‘차이나 파워’…“그들이 없으면 학교 운영 어렵다”

21일 오후 6시 어둠이 내리자 서울 광진구 건국대입구역 부근 상점의 간판들이 붉게 거리를 밝혔다. 중국 간체자로 쓰인 마라탕·훠궈·양꼬치 간판들이 즐비했다. 거리를 따라 30m를 걸어가도 마라탕 가게만 14개가 눈에 띌 정도다. 부근 음식점 출입문에는 중국어로 된 아르바이트생 모집 안내가 붙어 있다. 휴대폰 대리점의 매니저는 “오늘 오전 11시부터 신형 아이폰11을 3대 팔았다. 모두 중국인 유학생이 사 갔다. 건대 점퍼 입은 중국인 학생이 부모와 같이 와서 가족 할인받는 경우도 있다”고 말했다.
As darkness fell at 6 p.m. on November 21st, signboards of stores near Konkuk University Admission Zone in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, lit up the streets red. There were signs for Malatang (마라탕), Hot Pot (훠귀) and BBQ Lamb (양꼬치) written in Chinese simplified characters. Even if you walk 30 meters along the street, you can see 14 Malatang restaurants. Nearby a restaurant entrance door is marked with a Chinese-language guide to recruiting part-timers. "We've sold three new iPhone 11s since 11 a.m. today," said the manager of the mobile phone dealership. All Chinese students bought them. In some cases, a Chinese student wearing a Konkuk University jumper will come with his parents and get a family discount," he said.
국내 전문대와 4년제 대학 등에 유학 온 외국인 유학생(학위과정·어학연수생·기타연수생) 수가 올해 처음으로 16만 명을 넘어섰다. 이 가운데 중국 유학생이 7만 1067명(44.4%)을 차지하고 있다. 이처럼 한국 대학은 물론, 대학가까지 중국 유학생에게 의존하고 있다. 홍익대의 경우 전체 유학생 중 중국 유학생의 비중이 78.5%로 전국 대학(유학생 1000명 이상 대학 기준) 중 가장 높았다.

최근 홍콩 민주화운동 지지를 둘러싼 국내 학생과 중국 유학생 사이의 갈등에서도 ‘차이나 파워’가 발휘되고 있다. 21일 한국외대 캠퍼스에는 홍콩 시위 지지와 대학을 규탄하는 대자보가 교내 곳곳에 널려있고 바로 옆에는 “외부 단체의 ‘홍콩 시위’ 관련 대자보 부착을 제한한다”는 대학 측의 공식 의견문이 나란히 붙어 있다. 대자보를 붙이는 한국 학생 중 일부는 중국 유학생을 향해 욕설을 퍼붓기도 했다. 재학생 이모(22)씨는 “학교 측이 이번 일로 중국 유학생들에게 안 좋은 이미지로 비칠까 봐 걱정하는 눈치를 보인다”고 말했다. 중국인 유학생이 급증하면서 대학들도 유학생 관리에 신경을 쓰고 있다. 서울 소재 대학 홍보 관계자는 “중국 동문회를 별도로 만들어 대학이 관리한다는 것만으로도 더는 중국 학생들이 학내에서 ‘소수’가 아니라는 걸 뜻한다”고 말했다.

With the number of Chinese students surging, universities are also paying attention to managing their students. A public relations official at a Seoul-based university said, "The fact that Chinese alumni associations are established separately and managed by universities means that Chinese students are no longer "minorities" in the school."
이를 바라보는 중국 유학생들도 마음이 편치는 않다. 성균관대 중어중문학과 덩찌엔웨이(23)는 “한국 학생들이 홍콩 시위를 지지하는 건 개인의 신념일 수 있고, 대자보 붙이는 것도 개인의 자유라고 생각한다. 그런데 중국인 유학생들을 의식해 붙이는 느낌이 들었다. 반중 심리가 더해진 것 같았다”고 말했다.
Chinese students don’t like what they are seeing. Deng Chien-wei, a 23-year-old Chinese literature student at Sungkyunkwan University, said, "It can be a personal belief that Korean students support Hong Kong protests, and I think it is also a personal freedom. However, I feel that Chinese students are now aware of it. Anti-China sentiment seems to have been added," he said.
외국인 학생과 한국인 학생이 같은 대학을 다니면서도 교류할 기회가 많지 않다는 데엔 대부분의 유학생이 의견을 같이했다. 성균관대에 유학 중인 한 학생은 ＂외국인 관련 프로그램이 있긴 한 데 관심 있는 사람이 찾고 찾아야 알 수 있다. 학교 측에서 안내를 잘해주는 것 같진 않다”고 밝혔다.
Most students agreed that foreign and South Korean students do not have many opportunities to interact with each other while attending the same university. One student studying at Sungkyunkwan University said, "We have foreign-related programs, but we need to find out who is interested in them. I don't think the school is good at guiding me (to these programs)."
그러면서도 대학들이 외국 유학생들에 대해서만 등록금을 인상하는 데 불만을 터뜨렸다. 대학이 한국 학생에겐 등록금을 올릴 수 없다 보니 만만한 유학생들을 상대로 등록금을 올린다는 것이다. 예를 들어 서울의 한 대학은 인문대 등록금을 한국 학생에겐 350만원을 책정했지만 외국 유학생에겐 380만원을 받았다가 1년 지나 400만원 이상으로 인상했다. 이 때문에 유학생회가 꾸려져 대학 본부와 등록금 인상 협상을 벌이는 대학도 생겼다.

또한 외국인 유학생이 한국 대학에서 교육을 받으면서 가장 어려워하는 점은 한국어 수업을 따라가기 힘들다는 것이었다. 중앙대 경영학부 리싼위(24)는 “한국어 수업 중 교수님들이 외래어나 어려운 용어를 쓰면 무슨 말인지 이해하기 힘들었다. 내 주변엔 언어 때문에 힘들어하는 학생이 많다”고 말했다.
Also, the most difficult thing about foreign students being educated at Korean universities was that it was hard to keep up with Korean language classes. "It was hard to understand what professors meant when they used foreign or difficult terms during a Korean language class," said Li San-wei, a 24-year-old business administration student at Chung-Ang University. “There are many students around me who are struggling with language (Korean language)," he said.
수업 중 팀플(팀플레이·조별 과제)에서도 중국인 유학생은 언어 문제 등으로 인해 토론이나 발표를 맡지 못하다 보니 수업에서 겉도는 경우도 많다. 이러한 어려움을 느끼는 것은 중국 유학생만이 아니다. 베트남 출신의 한국외국어대 미디어커뮤니케이션학부 응웬 투 후엔(27)은 “한국어 수업을 듣는다. 아무리 열심히 해도 한국인만큼 성적 받기 힘들다. 열심히 해서 80점 이상 받았는데 C 학점을 받아서 너무 허탈했다”고 말했다.
In the team-play (team play and team assignment) during class, Chinese students do not participate in discussions or make presentations due to language problems, which is why they often feel left out of class. Nguyen Tu Huen, 27, a media communications department student at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies from Vietnam, said “He takes Korean language classes but no matter how hard I try, it's hard to get grades as well as Koreans. I worked hard and received 80 points, which was a ‘C’. This makes me frustrated.”
방글라데시 출신의 한국외국어대 국제학부 압둘라 알마루프(25)도 ＂따로 어학당을 다니지 않고서는 수업 내용을 거의 이해할 수 없었다. 한국 학생들과 수업 중 팀플하면 한국 학생들끼리만 얘기한다”고 토로했다.
Abdullah al-Marouf, 25, an international studies department at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies from Bangladesh, also said, "We can hardly understand the contents of class without attending a language school. When I'm teamed with Korean students in class, I only speak in Korean with Korean students."
