China Money Causes Silence
침묵을 이끌어내는 차이나 머니

지난 11일 중국 저장성 항저우의 알리바바 본사에 전 세계 10여 개국에서 온 기자 700여 명이 모여들었다. 광군제 행사로 알려진 `솽스이(雙十一) 글로벌 쇼핑 페스티벌` 취재에 초청받은 것이다.
More than 700 journalists from more than 10 countries from around the world gathered at Alibaba's headquarters in Hangzhou, China's Zhejiang Province, on November 11th. They were invited to cover 'Twaxi Global Shopping Festival', which is known as a "Gwanggunje event.”
그중 서양 기자 A가 눈에 띄었다. 국적을 가리지 않고 다른 기자들과 두루 잘 어울렸고, 무엇보다 알리바바 임원과의 `그룹 인터뷰` 때 질문하려고 부지런히 손을 치켜들었기 때문이다.그러나 A는 끝내 질문 기회를 얻지 못했다. `그룹 인터뷰`라고 이름을 붙일 만한 질의응답 시간이 없었기 때문이다. 알리바바 임원들은 보도자료에 나온 내용과 같은 대답을 한 뒤 바쁘다며 자리를 떴다. A는 결국 마이크를 넘겨 받지 못했다. `융숭한 대접을 해줄테니 질문은 말아달라`는 게 알리바바 입장 같았다.
Among them, a Western reporter “A” stood out. He was good with other reporters regardless of nationality. Above all, he diligently raised his hand to ask questions when he was doing a ‘group interview’ with an Alibaba executive. But “A” never got a chance to ask questions. This is because there was no question-and-answer session. Alibaba executives left their posts, saying they were busy after giving the same answer as what was said in the press release. “A” never received the microphone. Alibaba's position was, "Because I'll treat you well, don’t ask any questions."
`풍족하게 해줄 테니 정치 문제는 건드리지 말라`는 중국 외교 전략과 겹쳐 보였다. 중국은 전 세계에 선물 보따리를 풀고 있다. 중국은 최근 영국 브리티시스틸을 1000억원에 인수하고, 독일 도이치호텔을 1조원에 사들였다. 브라질과는 항구에 10억달러 투자를 약속했다. 그러면서 중국은 관영 매체를 통해 "말과 행동을 조심하라"고 경고한다. 중국 공개 비판은 점점 어려워지고 있다. 홍콩 시위 지지 뜻을 밝힌 미국 프로농구(NBA) 단장의 트윗에 전 중국이 NBA를 보이콧했다. 중국 기업 18곳이 NBA 후원을 끊자 트윗은 바로 삭제됐다. 차이나 머니가 침묵을 이끌어내고 있다. 글로벌 경기가 둔화될수록 중국 눈치를 더 많이 보게 될 것이다.
China's foreign policy strategy says, "I'll make you rich, so don't touch politics." China is unwrapping a bundle of gifts around the world. China has recently acquired Britain's British Steel for 100 billion won and bought Germany's Deutsche Hotel for 1 trillion won. China has promised to invest $1 billion in Brazilian ports. China, meanwhile, warns through its state-run media that “one should be careful of what you say and do.”
Public criticism of China is becoming increasingly difficult. China boycotted the NBA because of a tweet from a US NBA employee who expressed support for the Hong Kong protests. The tweets were immediately deleted when 18 Chinese companies cut off support from the NBA. China Money is drawing silence. The slower the global economy is, the more China will see the ‘nunchi’.
지난 11일 알리바바는 거래액 44조6200억원을 달성해 최고 기록을 다시 썼다. 이날 홍콩에서는 경찰이 처음으로 비무장 시위대를 겨눠 총을 쐈다. 분노한 홍콩 시민 수천 명이 거리로 뛰쳐나가 "홍콩 경찰은 살인자"라고 소리쳤지만 전 세계 각국 정상들은 조용했다. 광군제 행사 진행자는 전광판에 치솟는 거래액을 보며 "1초당 거래 54만4000건이 성사됐다"며 "중국 소비자 힘 덕분"이라고 외쳤다. 중국도 자신들 무기를 알고 있는 것처럼 보였다.
On November 11th, Alibaba rewrote its best record by achieving 44.62 trillion won in transactions. On the same day, police shot unarmed protesters for the first time in Hong Kong. Thousands of angry Hong Kong citizens took to the streets and shouted, "Hong Kong police are killers," but leaders from around the world were silent.
The organizer of the Gwanggun Festival sees the number of transactions soaring on the electronic display. "There were 544,000 transactions per second," he said. "Thanks to the power of Chinese consumers." China also seemed to know its weapons.
