주한미군 지휘부, '100세' 백선엽 장군에 "만수무강 기원"

1920년 태어나 올해 한국식 나이 셈법으로 100세가 된 백선엽 예비역 육군 대장의 생일을 맞아 주한미군 지휘부가 백 장군과 만나 축하와 감사, 그리고 존경의 뜻을 전했다. 한·일 군사정보보호협정(GSOMIA·지소미아) 종료 발표 후 ‘유예’로의 방침 변경, 주한미군 방위비 분담금 인상을 둘러싼 이견 등으로 ‘한·미 관계에 금이 간 것 아니냐’는 우려가 끊이지 않는 가운데 미국측이 다시 ‘동맹 관리’에 나선 것이란 평가가 나온다.
Marking the birthday of retired Army General Paik Sun-yup, who was born in 1920 and turned 100 this year, USFK command met with General Paik to express congratulations, gratitude, and respect. After announcing the end of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), concerns have persisted that the South Korea-U.S. relationship has been damaged due to the change of the policy to a “moratorium” and differences over raising the share of U.S. troops' defense expenses; analysts say that the U.S. is back in charge of “managing the alliance.”
26일 로버트 에이브럼스 주한미군 및 한·미연합사령부 사령관(육군 대장)의 트위터에는 그와 백 장군, 그리고 마이클 빌스 미 8군사령관(육군 중장)이 나란히 찍은 사진이 실려 있다. 게재일은 지난 22일이다. 1920년 11월23일 태어난 백 장군의 100번째 생일을 하루 앞두고 이를 기념한 것이다.

The publication date is the 22nd. It was celebrated a day before Gen. Paik's 100th birthday, which was born on Nov. 23, 1920.
에이브럼스 사령관은 사진과 함께 올린 글에서 “한국의 국민적 영웅(Korean National Hero) 백 장군의 100번째 생일을 맞아 빌스 사령관과 함께 경의를 표한다”며 “(6·25) 전쟁 당시를 회상하시다가도 금세 최신 뉴스로 화제를 돌리실 정도로 정신이 아주 또렷하시다”고 밝혔다.
"On the occasion of General Paik's 100th birthday, I pay tribute with General Bills," Abrams said in a post with the photo. "Let's remember the time of a Korean National Hero, someone so bright he’ll capture the news.”
이어 한·미 동맹을 상징하는 구호인 ‘같이 갑시다’를 한국어 발음의 영문 표기(‘Katchi Kapsida’)와 영어(‘We go together’)로 나란히 적었다.
He then wrote the slogan "Let's Go Together," which symbolizes the Korea-U.S. alliance, side-by-side with "Katchi Kapsida" and "We Go Together."
주한미군은 지난해 11월에는 백 장군의 생일을 앞두고 서울 용산구 국방컨벤션에서 성대한 축하 파티를 열었을 정도로 백 장군에 대한 존경심이 남다르다. 그가 6·25 전쟁 당시 한국군 장성 중에서 가장 잘 싸워 미군 등 유엔군 지휘부조차 경탄했던 사실을 잘 알고 있기 때문이다. 경기도 평택 캠프 험프리스의 미 8군사령부 건물에는 그의 이름을 딴 ‘백선엽 홀’이 있다.
The USFK has great respect for General Paik. Last November USFK held a grand celebration party at the Defense Convention in Yongsan-gu, central Seoul, ahead of Gen. Paik's birthday. This is because USFK is well aware of the fact that he fought the best among Korean generals during the Korean War and even the U.N. Command, including the U.S. military, marveled at him. The U.S. Eighth Army headquarters building in Camp Humphreys, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, all have "Paik Seon Yup Hall" named in his honor.
에이브럼스 사령관은 특히 백 장군에 대한 존경심이 남다른 것으로 알려져 있다. 1953년 체결된 한·미 동맹을 기념해 지난해 11월 열린 한·미 동맹 65주년 특별 기획전 당시 에이브럼스 사령관이 직접 백 장군을 찾아가 거수경례를 했다. 백 장군이 “당신(에이브럼스 사령관)의 아버지를 잘 안다”고 하자 에이브럼스 사령관은 “감사한 일”이라고 화답하기도 했다. 그의 부친은 6·25 전쟁 참전용사인 크레이튼 에이브럼스 전 육군참모총장이다.
Abrams is known for his extraordinary respect for General Paik. In commemoration of the Korea-U.S. alliance signed in 1953, Gen. Abrams visited General Paik in person and saluted him. When General Paik said, “He knew your father well,” Abrams responded by saying, "It's very kind of you." General Abram’s father is former Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams, a Korean War veteran.
올해 100세가 됐지만 백 장군은 ‘나라 분위기도 좋지 않는데’ 하는 심정에서 그냥 가족끼리만 모여 식사하는 등 생일을 조용히 보낸 것으로 전해졌다. 대신 지난 22일 동작구 국립서울현충원을 찾아 무명용사 묘역을 참배했다. 그는 요즘 난항을 겪는 한·미 방위비 분담금 협상 등과 관련해 언론 인터뷰에서 “한·미 동맹은 우리나라 안보의 기초”라고 거듭 강조했다.
Although he turned 100 years old this year, General Paik was said to have spent his birthday quietly, as he was feeling "the atmosphere of the country is not good," just having a meal with his family. Instead, he visited the Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu on Tuesday to pay tribute to the graves of unknown soldiers. "The South Korea-U.S. alliance is the foundation of our national security," he said in a press interview on the issue of the Korea-U.S. defense cost-sharing negotiations.
