South Korean students are standing firm with the Hong Kong democratic independence movement. JTBC news reports:
“The Hong Kong Protesters are modeled after the Korean uprising in June 1987. I think it's spreading to our own universities…Unlike in the past, there are now lots of Chinese foreign exchange students in South Korea.”
The above infographic explains that of the 160,000 foreign exchange students studying in South Korea, 70,000 students are Chinese. Scores of Chinese students are responding negatively to the South Korean students’ displays of democratic solidarity with the Hong Kong Independence Movement.
The above infographic quotes both a South Korean student and a Chinese student studying in South Korea.
South Korean Student:
“The Hong Kong situation reminds me of the 5.18 history and our country’s democratic movement. As intellectuals, we have to give strength.”
Chinese student studying in South Korea:
“The Hong Kong situation, is an internal China issue. I don’t know why it matters to South Koreans.”
South Korean and Chinese students continue to clash over the Hong Kong Independence movement and it does get physical. Chosun Ilbo recently reported on Communist Chinese students seeking to silence South Korean students exercising their democratic right to free speech.
Dozens of South Korean students and Chinese students had a standoff with each other for more than four hours on the first floor of Hanyang University in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Around 1 p.m., about 10 members of the school's "Students' Gathering to Promote the Truth of Hong Kong" posted two large-page posters in support of the Hong Kong protests. Five Chinese students who were passing by, began protesting against it. They soon rushed each other, bumping shoulders with South Korean students, engaging in a physical struggle of pushing and pulling. Chinese students drew a poster of a Communist Chinese Flag saying, 'Long live Kim Jong Un' and 'Dokdo is Japanese land.' The confrontation continued. The number of Chinese students increased over time, reaching about 40 at 5 p.m. The confrontation ended when security guards finally intervened.
Chosun Ilbo reports:
Online war of words is also intensifying. Weibo, a Chinese social media outlet, said, ‘We are disappointed that Korea University is ranked third, and these young people are the best young people in Korea.’
‘I am in favor of ‘hidden sanctions’ on South Korea. We have to show them a hot taste.’
‘Let's not come to Korea to study. Spending money on such a country is a luxury in itself.’
Korean students also sent out abusive postings, such as
‘You know that this is not a communist country?’
‘Take that nationalism and quit your studies and go home.’
‘You are just animals that have learned nothing from history.’
