“저는 태영호 의원처럼 남에서 북으로 가거나 북에서 남으로 온 게 아니지 않나? 그런 저에게 사상전향을 역으로 묻는 건 아무리 청문위원이라도 온당하지 않다. 아직 남쪽 민주주의에 대한 이해도가 떨어지는 거라고 말씀드릴 수밖에 없다.”
"Many people ask me if I've changed my ideology. I sang the South Korean national anthem in my first interview. When did you ever make a public declaration saying, 'that you are not a believer in North Korea’s Juche ideology'?"
"I didn't go from South Korea to North Korea or from North Korea to South Korea like Rep. Tae Young-ho, did I? To me, it is not fair to ask about my ideological belief, even if it is hearing committee member asking the question. I have no choice but to say that we still have a poor understanding of democracy in South Korea.”

23일 열린 이인영 통일부 장관 후보자에 대한 국회 외교통일위원회 인사청문회에서 태영호 미래통합당 의원과 이 후보자가 주고받은 대화다. 태 의원은 질의 시작과 함께 판넬을 들어 보이며 “후보자의 삶의 궤적을 추적해봤는데, 제가 이렇게 제목을 달았다. ‘태영호와 이인영, 두 김일성 주체사상 신봉자의 삶의 궤도’. 동의하나?”라고 물었다. 이 후보자는 “지금 바로 동의할 수는 없는 문제 아니겠나”라고 답했다. 태 의원은 다시 “제가 김일성 주체사상 원조 맞나”라고 물으며 웃었다. 이에 이 후보자는 굳은 얼굴로 “원조라고 했나? 잘 모르겠다”고 했다.
This is the conversation Tae Young-ho, a lawmaker of the Future Unification Party, had with Unification Minister nominee Lee In-young during a confirmation hearing at the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on July 23rd. Rep. Tae began the questioning for the panel: "I tracked the trajectory of the nominee Lee's life, and I titled it like this. "Tae Young-ho and Lee In-young, the life trajectory of two Kim Il-sung followers of Juche. Do you agree?" Lee replied, "I can't agree with this." "Am I the originator of Kim Il Sung's Juche (self-reliance) ideology?" Tae laughed again. Lee replied with a stiff face, "Did you say aid? I don't know," he said.
이른바 ‘사상검증 논쟁’은 이후 벌어졌다. “질의 내용이 온당하지 않다, 남쪽의 민주주의에 대한 이해도가 아직 떨어지는 것 같다”는 이 후보자의 말에 태 의원은 불편한 표정을 지으며 반격했다. 태 의원은 “아직도 주체사상 신봉자인가 아닌가. 국민 앞에서 ‘솔직히 나는 주체사상을 버렸다’ (이렇게 말하는 게) 그렇게 힘든 말인가?”라고 목소리를 높였다.
An "ideological vetting debate" took place. When Lee said, "The content of the question is not decent, and the understanding of democracy in the South Korea seems to be low." Tae argued back with an uncomfortable look on his face, "Are you not still a believer in Juche? Honestly, just say ‘I no longer believe in Juche.’ Is that so hard?"
그러자 이 후보자 역시 격앙된 어조로 “그 당시도 주체사상 신봉자가 아니었고 지금도 아니라는 점은 분명히 말씀드리지만, 그럼에도 이런 이야기가 태 의원이 저에게 사상 전향을 끊임없이 강요하거나 추궁하는 행위로 그렇게 (국민에게) 오인되지 않길 바란다”고 대응했다. 또 “사상 검증과 사상 전향을 강요하는 것은 다른 얘기”라고 얼굴을 붉혔다. 이 후보자는 “우리나라에서 제가 알기로 사상 전향을 강요한 것은 북과 남쪽의 독재정권 시절이었다”고 했다.
Lee responded in an angry tone, saying, "I want to make it clear that I was never a believer in Juche nor am I now, but I don't want all of this talk to be misunderstood by the public. To enforce and demand ideological vetting, belief vetting. That is a different story. As far as I know in our country, it was during the dictatorships of North Korea and South Korea that ideological conformity was enforced.”

이 후보자는 이후 이어진 정진석 의원 질의 시간에도 “전향을 요구하는 것에 대해선 받아들일 수 없는 것 아니겠나”라며 불쾌한 심경을 드러냈다. 태 의원의 질문 순서가 끝난 뒤에도 여진은 계속됐다. 더불어민주당 외통위 간사인 김영호 의원은 “대한민국 출신의 4선 국회의원에게 ‘주체사상을 포기하라, 전향했느냐’ 이런 말을 하는 것은 국회를 모욕하는 행위”라고 했고, 윤건영 민주당 의원 역시 “(이 후보자는) 천박한 사상 검증의 대상이 아니다”라고 가세했다.
Even during the subsequent question and answer session of Chung Jin-suk, Lee expressed his displeasure, saying, "It is unacceptable to ask about conversion." Aftershocks continued even after Rep. Tae's questioning was over. Kim Young-ho, secretary of the Democratic Party of Korea's Foreign Affairs and Trade Committee, said, "It is an insult to the National Assembly to tell a four-term lawmaker from Korea, 'Give up his belief in Juche, and to ask for his conversion.'“ Yoon Kun-young, a lawmaker of the Democratic Party, also added, "(Lee) is should not be subject to this shallow ideological vetting.”
또 이재정 민주당 의원은 태 의원 질의 직후 자신의 페이스북에 "어떤 상황에 대한 판단을 묻거나 구체적 행보를 예로 들면서 문제점을 지적하는 것은 가능할 수 있겠으나, 다짜고짜 특정사상을 믿느냐!!라는 사상 검증태도는 대한민국 헌법이 그 누구에게도 허락한 적 없다"며 "그럴거라는 말이 있다고 할때 '그러면 코미디지'라고 일축했는데"라고 적었다. 이 의원은 청문회 참석 중이었다. 반면 통합당 간사인 김석기 의원은 “이 후보자가 과거에 김일성 주체사상파인 전대협 의장을 한 것을 국민이 다 아는데, 지금도 주체사상을 그대로 신봉하고 있느냐고 묻는 건 자연스러운 일”이라며 “지금 북한의 통일부 장관을 뽑는 자리가 아니지 않나”라고 맞섰다.
Lee Jae-joung, a member of the Democratic Party of South Korea, also said on his Facebook page shortly after Rep. Tae’s questioning, "It may be possible to point out the problem by asking for judgment on what situation or taking concrete steps as an example, but do you really believe in certain ideas!! The Constitution of the Republic of Korea has never allowed anyone to do so," he said. "When I heard that, I dismissed it as 'a a comedy, just a comedy." Lee was attending a hearing. On the other hand, Rep. Kim Seok-ki, secretary of the United Party, said, "People know that candidate Lee served as chairman of the North Korea's National Association of Korean National Defense Commission for Juche ideology in the past, but is it natural to ask whether he still believes in Juche ideology today." He replied, "We are not selecting North Korea's unification minister.”
