미·중 관계가 불편한 상황에서 주한 미국대사와 중국 대사가 오늘(22일) 만나 양국관계 등을 논의한 것으로 확인됐습니다. 주한 미국대사관과 중국대사관에 따르면 해리 해리스 주한 미국대사는 오늘 오전 10시 반부터 1시간가량 중구 정동 미국 대사관저에서 싱하이밍 주한 중국 대사와 만나 미중관계와 한반도 정세 등에 대해 의견을 나눴습니다.
The U.S. ambassador to South Korea and the Chinese ambassador to South Korea met today (July 22nd) to discuss bilateral relations and other issues at a time when U.S.-China relations are strained. According to the U.S. Embassy in Seoul and the Chinese Embassy, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Harry Harris, met with Chinese Ambassador to South Korea, Xing Hai Ming, at the U.S. Embassy in Jeong-dong, Jung-gu, for about an hour from 10:30 a.m. today to discuss U.S.-China relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
해리스 대사는 트위터에 회동사실을 공개하며 "오늘 싱하이밍 주한 중국대사님과 좋은 만남을 갖고 중요한 미·중 관계에 대해 논의했다"고 적었습니다. 해리스 대사는 싱하이밍 대사와 환하게 웃으며 찍은 '셀카'도 트위터에 올렸습니다. 주한 미국대사관 대변인은 "해리스 대사가 미 대사관저에서 주한 중국대사와 첫 만남을 가졌다"며 "이후 해리스 대사는 싱 대사와 다양한 외교 현안에 대해 생산적인 논의를 할 수 있어 좋았다고 말했다"고 전했습니다. 왕웨이 주한중국대사관 대변인은 "싱 대사님 취임 후 공식 예방 차원에서 방문했다"며 "공동 관심사를 포함해 여러 이슈에 대해 이야기를 나눴다"고 말했습니다.
Ambassador Harris revealed the meeting on Twitter and wrote, "Today, we had a good meeting with Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Xing Haiming and discussed the importance of U.S.-China relations." Harris also tweeted a selfie with a bright smile with Ambassador Xing Haiming. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Seoul said, "Harris had his first meeting with the Chinese ambassador to South Korea at the U.S. Embassy. After that, Harris said, “It was good to have productive discussions with Xing on various diplomatic issues." Wang Wei, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, said, “It is an official visit after Ambassador Xing took office. We talked about a number of issues, including common interests.”
이번 회동은 늦게 부임한 대사가 다른 나라의 대사를 예방하는 외교 관례에 따라 이뤄진 것으로 알려졌습니다. 해리스 대사는 2018년 7월에 부임했고, 싱하이밍 대사는 올해 1월 한국에 왔습니다. 그동안 두 대사가 각종 행사 등에서 만난 적은 있지만, 정식으로 양자 회동을 한 것은 처음입니다. 미국과 중국 간 갈등의 골이 깊어가는 상황에서 이뤄진 양국 대사의 회동은 상당히 이례적이라는 게 외교가의 평가입니다.
The meeting was reportedly held in accordance with the diplomatic practice of visiting ambassadors from other countries. Ambassador Harris took office in July 2018, and Ambassador Xing Haiming came to South Korea in January of this year. The two ambassadors have met at various events, but this is the first time that they have officially met. Diplomats say that the meeting between the two ambassadors, which took place at a time when the conflict between the U.S. and China is deepening, is quite unusual.
